The territory was originally called “Los Llanos del Topo” and was granted to Captain José de Treviño on 25 April 1604 by Governor Diego de Montemayor. His son José de Ayala later founded the settlement known as “Topo de los Ayala” around the Hacienda del Topo de San Nicolás Tolentino. The community remained under Monterrey’s jurisdiction until 1867, when Governor Jerónimo Treviño separated it from San Nicolás de los Garza; a decree on 24 February 1868 created the Villa de Gral. Escobedo, named for General Mariano Escobedo.
