01 · Overview

Aberdeen, in brief

Aberdeen is a port city located in North East Scotland. As the third most populous city in Scotland, it serves as one of the nation's 32 local authorities administered by the Aberdeen City Council.

What defines the landscape and climate of Aberdeen?

The geography of the area is characterized by a long, sandy coastline and an extent of 186 square kilometres (72 square miles) situated between two river mouths. Built upon many hills, the original beginnings of the city grew from Castle Hill, St. Catherine's Hill, and Windmill Hill. The local climate is oceanic, featuring cool summers and mild, rainy winters. Because of its northern latitude, Aberdeen is positioned further north than almost all of Denmark and southern Sweden, lying just south of Gothenburg.

Geologically, the city sits on an inlier of Devonian "Old Red" sandstones and silts, while its outskirts extend onto surrounding metamorphic and igneous complexes formed during the Dalradian period approximately 480 to 600 million years ago. This terrain includes sporadic areas of igneous diorite granites, such as the stone found at the Rubislaw quarry that was used to build much of the Victorian architecture across the urban area.
