01 · Overview

Penzing, in brief

Penzing is the 14th district of Vienna in Austria, situated in the western part of the city. Encompassing an area of 33.96 square kilometers, it serves as the fourth largest district in Vienna and accounts for 8.2 percent of the city's total area.

The historical turning point for the district's administrative identity occurred under the Nazi regime on October 15, 1938, when the territory was formally split into its own independent district configuration. Prior to this structural reorganization, the area under Penzing's jurisdiction—excluding Hadersdorf-Weidlingau—had been transferred from Upper Austria to the city of Vienna in 1892, originally operating as the 13th district in combination with modern Hietzing. Following the 1938 division, everything situated north of the River Wien was assigned to Hietzing, while the remaining territory, alongside the newly incorporated Hadersdorf-Weidlingau, formed the 14th district of Penzing. This reconfiguration also briefly incorporated the territory of Purkersdorf until it reverted to Lower Austria in 1954, after which Penzing's borders remained largely unchanged.

Geographically positioned between the Alps and the Vienna Basin, Penzing features extensive natural landscapes. It stands as the second most forested district in Vienna, with 47.4 percent of its area covered by forests, including portions of the Wienerwald, Steinhof park, and Dehnepark. Its highest point is Schutzengel Mountain, reaching an elevation of 508 meters.

Demographic shifts mirror the area's evolving history. In 1869, the population stood at 12,397 residents before doubling by 1892 due to city expansion and immigration. After peaking at 98,123 residents in 1934 and declining in the latter half of the twentieth century to 78,619 by 2001, the population rebounded in the twenty-first century. Today, the district supports a recorded population of 98,176 inhabitants within the State of Vienna, operating under the Central European Time zone and utilizing the EUR currency.
