01 · Overview

Ottakring, in brief

Ottakring

Ottakring is the 16th District located in the city of Vienna, Austria, positioned west of the central districts, north of Penzing, and south of Hernals. The district features a population of 104,627 residents and operates within the Europe/Vienna timezone using the EUR currency, with administrative placement in the State of Vienna.

A major historical turning point for the area unfolded on January 1, 1892, when a resolution took effect following a law passed by the Lower Austrian government in 1890. This legislation incorporated the independent villages of Ottakring and Neulerchenfeld into Vienna as the 16th district, fulfilling a desire declared by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1888 to unite Vienna with its surrounding villages. Prior to this incorporation, the original settlement founded approximately 1,000 years ago by Bavarian settlers on the slope of the Gallitzinberg had been completely destroyed in 1683 during the Battle of Vienna, leading to a rebuild further downstream known as Alt-Ottakring.

Following its 1892 incorporation, the area experienced rapid growth, with the population rising to 177,687 people by 1910. Although employment opportunities were initially limited, the high number of workers encouraged industries to move to the area, establishing a dense checkerboard pattern of residential housing around factories near the Gürtel road. Later, the district faced severe economic and political upheavals during the 1930s, including an economic collapse that surged unemployment to over 50 percent and the brief Austrian Civil War of 1934, which brought major instability and heavy fighting around the workers' housing in Kreitnergasse Street.

Geographically, Ottakring spans between the Gürtel and the hills of the Wienerwald, covering an area made up of 36.7 percent green space, 45.4 percent buildings, and 17.9 percent transportation. The district includes the Gallitzinberg, also known as Wilheminenberg, which reaches 449 meters and hosts Schloss Wilheminenberg on its slope. Recognized languages spoken across the administrative region include German, Croatian, Hungarian, and Slovenian.
