01 · OverviewJizzax, in brief
Jizzax is a district-level city serving as the administrative center of the Jizzakh Region in Uzbekistan. Located northeast of Samarkand at latitude 40.13351 and longitude 67.82956, the city accommodates a population of 179,200.
Ancient fortifications and strategic corridors
Derived from the Sogdian word dizak, meaning small fortress, the settlement developed at the edge of the Golodnaya Steppe and near the Ilan Uti in the Turkestan Mountains. This strategic geography allowed the location to control vital approaches to the Zeravshan Valley, Samarkand, and Bukhara.
The 1219 turning point
During the medieval era, Jizzax functioned as a thriving Silk Road junction connecting Samarkand with the Fergana Valley. Relative prosperity under the Khwarazmian Empire reached an abrupt end in 1219 when the newly formed Mongol Empire launched its invasion. In 1220, the invasion force invaded and destroyed the settlement, resulting in the killing of most of the population and the leveling of the majority of the city, plunging it into a prolonged state of decay.
Rebuilding under Timur
The settlement later fell into the western portion of the Chagatai Khanate. By 1370, Timur assumed control of Transoxiana. Because Jizzax sat geographically near the border of Timur's realm and Moghulistan while controlling a key mountain pass, the location was likely rebuilt and refortified during this period.
Modern administrative integration
Following incorporation into the Russian Empire, the area was placed under the jurisdiction of the Samarkand Oblast established in 1887. Following national delimitation in Central Asia that started in 1924, Jizzax was placed within the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic. Today, the city operates within Uzbekistan using the UZS currency and recognizes Uzbek, Russian, and Tajik languages.
