01 · Overview

Rivne, in brief

Rivne is a city in western Ukraine serving as the administrative center of Rivne Oblast and Rivne Raion. With a population estimated at 243,873, it functions as a vital connection point in the region.

First recorded in the late 13th century in the Polish annals Rocznik kapituły krakowskiej, the settlement grew along the route linking Kyiv and Volodymyr. Under the governance of Lithuania and Poland, the locality attained Magdeburg Law in the late 15th century through the efforts of Princess Maria, who established a princely residence on a local river island following the death of her husband, Prince Semen Nesvizh. Control later passed to the Ostrogski and Lubomirski noble families during the late 16th century.

The Russian Empire annexed the settlement in 1793. During the latter half of the 19th century, Rivne expanded rapidly after becoming an established railway hub. In the spring of 1919, amidst ongoing conflict with Soviet Russia, the municipality operated as the provisional seat of the Ukrainian government. The area subsequently belonged to Poland as a county seat of Wołyń Voivodeship between World War I and World War II. Following occupation by the Soviet Red Army in 1939, it became the regional government seat of the newly created Rivne Oblast. During the German occupation from 1941 to 1944, the city served as the capital of Reichskommissariat Ukraine.

Today, Rivne operates as an important transportation center featuring the international Rivne Airport. Rail connections link the municipality to Zdolbuniv, Sarny, and Kovel, while highways connect it to Brest, Kyiv, and Lviv. Local industrial infrastructure includes the Rivne-Azot chemical factory, which operates as part of Ostchem Holding.
