Ukraine

Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe covering an area of 603,628 square kilometres. It stands as the second-largest nation in Europe after Russia, bordered to the north by Belarus, to the west by Poland and Slovakia, and to the southwest by Hungary, Romania, and Moldova.

The Dawn of Kievan Rus

Human habitation on this territory stretches back to at least 32,000 BC. During the Middle Ages, the region witnessed early Slavic expansion before developing into the central hub of East Slavic culture under the state of Kievan Rus' in the 9th century. By the 10th and 11th centuries, Kievan Rus' grew into the most powerful realm in Europe, beginning with the reign of Vladimir the Great, who introduced Christianity, and reaching its cultural zenith under Yaroslav the Wise. Following fragmentation into rival regional powers, the territory was devastated by Mongol invasions in the 13th century, including the destruction of Kyiv in 1240.

Centuries of Contested Rule

For the subsequent six centuries, external powers vied for control over the divided area. Administrations shifted across the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Kingdom of Poland, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Austrian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the Tsardom of Russia. In the 17th century, central Ukraine saw the rise of the Cossack Hetmanate. Bohdan Khmelnytsky led massive uprisings against the Polish king, ultimately signing the Pereiaslav Agreement in 1654, which established a military and political alliance with Russia and initiated decades of partition and absorption into the Russian Empire.

Revolution, Independence, and Modern Conflict

Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, the short-lived Ukrainian People's Republic emerged prior to Bolshevik consolidation and the creation of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, which joined the Soviet Union in 1922. The early 1930s brought the Holodomor, a human-made famine that killed millions of Ukrainians, and World War II brought German occupation, major battles, and the death of 7 million civilians. Ukraine declared independence in 1991 as the Soviet Union dissolved. Political transformations continued through the Orange Revolution of 2004–2005 and the Euromaidan revolution in 2014, which was followed by Russia's unilateral occupation and annexation of Crimea and the war in Donbas. The 2022 Russian invasion marked the current phase of the war.

Today, Ukraine operates as a unitary semi-presidential republic with Kyiv as its capital and largest city, followed by Kharkiv, Odesa, and Dnipro. With an estimated total population of 32.3 million in 2026, the nation maintains the sixth-largest military globally and remains an important global exporter of grain from its extensive fertile lands, alongside its ongoing processes of integration with European and international institutions detailed by Ukraine.
