01 · Overview

Kryvyy Rih, in brief

Kryvyy Rih is a city situated in central Ukraine within the Dnipropetrovsk region. Estimated to house 603,904 residents, the sprawling urban settlement spans the confluence of the Saksahan and Inhulets rivers.

Originally established in 1775 as a military staging post by Zaporozhian Cossacks, the area later transformed through international industrial enterprise. During the 1880s, urban-industrial growth accelerated as Belgian, French, and British investors arrived to exploit rich iron-ore deposits in the Kryvbas region. This foreign capital spurred early industrial infrastructure, including the 1880 founding of the French Society of Kryvyi Rih Ores by Alexander Pol and the subsequent launch of the Hdantsivka ironworks in 1892, with local ore even feeding the German metallurgical industry in Silesia.

Over succeeding decades, global economic and industrial networks continued to shape the municipality. Stalin-era industrialisation led to the 1934 construction of Kryvorizhstal, which became the largest integrated metallurgical works in the Soviet Union. In the twenty-first century, international ownership returned when the Indian-owned international steel conglomerate Mittal Steel purchased Kryvorizhstal in a 2005 auction for $4.8 billion, later merging to form ArcelorMittal headquartered in Luxembourg City.

Labour dynamics frequently reflected wider cross-border economic pressures and migrations. During major labour protests and strikes beginning in 2017, plant management noted that skilled workers were actively emigrating to European destinations such as Poland and Czechia amid ongoing wage and safety disputes. Workers at the steel plant demanded monthly pay of 1,000 euros, drawing attention to international wage disparities. Cross-cultural and linguistic exchange within the broader region is further mirrored in the languages spoken across the administrative territory, which officially encompass Ukrainian, Russian, Romani, Polish, and Hungarian.
