01 · Overview

Brovary, in brief

Brovary is a city situated in Kyiv Oblast in northern Ukraine, lying to the east of the capital Kyiv as part of the Kyiv metropolitan area. It functions as the administrative centre of Brovary Raion and hosts the administration of the Brovary urban hromada.

Historical Turning Points and Evolution

First mentioned in 1630 when it consisted of 60 or 70 houses, the settlement evolved significantly through centuries of military and administrative shifts. A Cossack sotnia formed there in 1649, and local Cossacks participated in the Khmelnytsky Uprising under the leadership of Bohdan Khmelnytsky. Separately, the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko visited the town many times between 1829 and 1847. Originally called Brovari, the name was altered in 1969 to align more closely with Russian naming conventions, though proposals emerged in 2024 to restore the original Ukrainian standard.

Military conflicts repeatedly marked the area, including battles between Ukrainian troops and the Bolsheviks in January 1918, followed by fighting in November 1918 involving the Hetman guard and rebel forces of Anhel and Zeleny. Having received official city status in 1956, Brovary later encountered international attention in April 2000 when a stray surface-to-surface missile struck an apartment block during a training exercise.

During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the area became a crucial defense sector. On 10 March 2022, an attack struck a Russian armoured column at Skybyn just outside the city as forces attempted a northern approach, and subsequent fighting occurred on 11 March as Russian troops tried to encircle Kyiv from the east. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense declared the entire Kyiv Oblast liberated on 2 April 2022 after opposing forces departed.

Geography and Layout

Positioned 20 kilometers from Kyiv, the city rests within the mixed forest terrain of Brovary Raion and experiences a moderately continental climate. Traditionally divided into an old town, a new town, and an industrial district, the modern center features parks, administrative offices, and manufacturing plants producing furniture, knitting, machine tools, and plastic materials. Approximately 100,000 people live in the city, which operates within the Europe/Kyiv timezone.
