02 · Overview

Borshchahivka, in brief

Borshchahivka is a neighborhood situated in the west and south-west of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. Located at coordinates 50.4316 latitude and 30.3899 longitude, the area is part of the city's Sviatoshynskyi District and suburban Bucha Raion, operating within the Europe/Kyiv timezone.

What is the history of Borshchahivka?

First mentioned in 1497, the settlement historically consisted of several villages that belonged to Kyiv monasteries and acquired their names accordingly. By 1686, descriptions noted that most of these villages were empty, having been devastated following wars in the second half of the 17th century. A historical turning point occurred in 1786 with the secularization of church lands, after which the settlements and their peasants became the property of the state. Following the abolition of serfdom in the Russian Empire, the population experienced rapid growth, rising from 558 inhabitants in 1787 to 5,702 by 1913. During the Ukrainian War of Independence in 1918–1919, Borshchahivka served as the site of numerous battles over the control of Kyiv, fought by the Ukrainian army and rebel forces against the Bolsheviks, Hetmanate, and the Russian Volunteer Army. Later, the area suffered heavily during the famine of 1932–1933, when up to 1,000 people died in Borshchahivka and Bilychi.

How did urbanization transform the neighborhood?

The contemporary urban landscape emerged primarily from development projects in the 1960s and 1970s. The villages of Mykilska, Bratska, and Mykhailivska Borshchahivka were officially included within the city limits of Kyiv on August 30, 1971. The Kyivproject Institute developed plans for new residential estates, most notably Mykilska Borshchahivka, designed to house 100,000 people across multiple microdistricts. Construction of this residential area on the site of the former village took place between 1966 and 1977. Instead of a planned metro extension, a light rail line was constructed to connect Borshchahivka with Kyiv's central railway station, becoming operational in 1978.
