01 · OverviewLjubljana, in brief
Ljubljana is the capital and largest city of Slovenia. Positioned north of the country's largest marsh along a historical trade route between the northern Adriatic Sea and the Danube region, the city functions as the cultural, educational, economic, political, and administrative centre of the nation.
Human habitation in the area dates back to prehistoric times, marked by notable archaeological findings such as ancient pile dwellings and the oldest wooden wheel in the world within the Ljubljana Marsh. During antiquity, a Roman city named Emona stood in the location. First mentioned in written records during the first half of the 12th century, Ljubljana served as the historical capital of Carniola under Habsburg rule from the Middle Ages until the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918.
Throughout its history, the city experienced several critical turning points driven by natural disasters and geopolitical shifts. Following the 1511 Idrija earthquake, the settlement was rebuilt in the Renaissance style with a new protective wall. A severe earthquake with a moment magnitude of 6.1 struck in 1895, destroying roughly ten percent of the buildings and causing 21 deaths. The subsequent reconstruction period between 1896 and 1910, led by mayor Ivan Hribar, reshaped the urban landscape with Vienna Secession architecture and rapid modernization in public health, education, administration, and tourism.
In the 20th century, the city underwent major political transitions. After 1918, it joined the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later becoming the capital of the Drava Banovina in 1929. During World War II, Axis forces occupied the area, establishing command centres and surrounding the city with a fortified barbed-wire fence. Following the war, Ljubljana became the capital of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It retained this designation until 1991, when Slovenia declared independence and Ljubljana became the capital of the newly formed state.
