01 · Overview

New Caledonia, in brief

New Caledonia is a French territory of islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean. It lies about 220 km southwest of Vanuatu and 1,210 km east of Australia.

Rugged limestone cliffs, turquoise lagoons

The archipelago belongs to the Melanesia subregion and spreads over roughly 19,060 km². Its main island, Grande Terre, is locally called le Caillou, and the chain also includes the Loyalty Islands, the Chesterfield Islands in the Coral Sea, the Belep archipelago, the Isle of Pines and several remote islets.

Geographically the islands sit at latitude ‑22.27407 and longitude 166.44884, placing the territory about 16,100 km from Metropolitan France. The landscape combines ancient volcanic foundations, extensive coral reefs, mangrove swamps and striking limestone formations that create a mosaic of marine and terrestrial habitats.

The capital, Nouméa, anchors the affluent South Province on Grande Terre. The North Province occupies the northern part of the same island, while the Loyalty Islands Province consists of four inhabited islands off the east coast: Ouvéa, Lifou, Tiga and Maré. The indigenous Kanak people, who make up 41 % of the population, are predominant in the North and Loyalty Islands, whereas the South Province hosts a mix of European (Caldoches and Metropolitan French), Polynesian (mainly Wallisian) and other communities.

According to the official facts, New Caledonia has a population of 284,060. The official currency is the CFP franc (XPF) and the recognized language is French (fr‑NC). As a sui generis collectivity of the French Republic, it enjoys a unique legal status enshrined in a dedicated chapter of the French Constitution and is associated with the European Union as an overseas country and territory (OCT).
