Egypt spans the northeast corner of Africa and the southwest corner of Asia via the Sinai Peninsula. Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Palestine and Israel to the northeast, the Red Sea to the east, Sudan and the Sahara to the south, and Libya to the west, the country also features the Gulf of Aqaba in the northeast separating it from Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

The landscape and climate of Egypt have experienced dramatic shifts across millennia. In ancient times, the region known as km.t, or Kemet, derived its name from terms meaning black, which referred to the fertile black soils of the Nile floodplains. This contrasted with the deshret, or red land of the desert. Around 8000 BCE, climate changes and overgrazing began to desiccate pastoral lands, gradually forming the Sahara. These environmental shifts prompted early tribal peoples to migrate toward the Nile River, where they established a settled agricultural economy and a more centralised society along the Nile Delta, tracing heritage back to the 6th–4th millennia BCE.

These regions were collectively referred to as tāwy, meaning The Two Lands.

Furthermore, the Gulf of Aqaba situated in the northeast separates Egypt from Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The reliance on the Nile floodplains created a cradle of civilisation that saw some of the earliest developments of agriculture and urbanisation. While the vast interior remains dominated by desert conditions, the riverbanks and northern coast maintain distinct ecological profiles that have sustained large populations throughout the country's extensive history.
