01 · Overview

Lüshun, in brief

Southern Edge, Silent Waters

Lüshun is a district of Dalian in Liaoning province, China. It occupies the extreme southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula and is famed for its natural, lake-like harbor.

The district spans an area of 512.15 square kilometers and borders the Yellow Sea to the southeast, Korea Bay to the east, and the Bohai Sea to its west. Central Dalian lies some 40 kilometers farther up the coast, while the harbor itself forms a well-sheltered and fortifiable basin near the peninsular tip.

Historically, the harbor’s strategic value sparked international rivalry. Known to the West as Port Arthur after a British survey in 1860, and to the Japanese as Ryojun, the port changed hands between Russian and Japanese administrations from 1895 until control was ceded to Japan following the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–05. Its control was a central cause of that conflict, building upon the name Lüshunkou, meaning port of smooth journeys, which was bestowed in 1371.

The broader district recorded a permanent population of 398,579 as of 2020.

For a detailed historical and geographic overview, see the Lüshunkou Wikipedia entry.
