01 · Overview

Viña del Mar, in brief

Viña del Mar is a city and commune situated on the Pacific coast of central Chile. Often referred to as La Ciudad Jardín, or The Garden City, it functions as the most populous municipality in its region and the fourth-largest city in the country.

The landscape of the city is defined by its position on the central coast along the shores of Valparaíso Bay and across the basins of the Reñaca and Marga Marga streams. The territorial configuration of the urban area includes a coastal plain zone known as the plan, which contains the oldest sector of the city. Surrounding this plan are hills where more than 80% of the population resides, featuring neighborhoods such as Recreo and Reñaca.

The climate and soils of central Chile historically facilitated viticulture in the Marga Marga stream basin, where Alonso de Riberos planted the first vineyards in 1580. This agricultural activity continued until 1827, when a severe storm of wind and rain destroyed the old vineyards. Today, the area supports an entirely urban population of 334,248 inhabitants, operating within the America/Santiago timezone and utilizing the Chilean Peso.

Founded on December 28, 1874, by the Chilean politician and writer José Francisco Vergara alongside his wife Mercedes Alvares, the city grew from lands they inherited. Vergara hired engineers to lay out the street plans and establish an urban nucleus. Over subsequent decades, industrial and infrastructural developments transformed the settlement. The establishment of the Viña del Mar Sugar Refining Company in 1873 and Lever, Murphy & Co. in 1883 provided early economic impetus. Later, the authorization of a casino by President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo in 1928, which opened on December 31, 1930, acted as a major catalyst in turning the coastal settlement into a premier international resort. Further enhancing its character, the Presidential Palace at Castle Hill opened on January 31, 1931, as a summer residence for the Chilean president, alongside the subsequent inaugurations of the O'Higgins Hotel in 1936 and the Miramar Hotel by Caleta Abarca Beach in 1945.

Administratively, the local governance of the commune resides in an autonomous public-law corporation comprising a mayor and a municipal council. Broad Front politician Macarena Ripamonti has served as the mayor since 2021, working alongside a ten-member municipal council elected by universal suffrage.
