Macapá

Macapá is a city in Brazil that serves as the capital of the state of Amapá. Positioned within the country's North Region, the city sits on a small plateau along the northern channel of the Amazon Delta near its Atlantic Ocean mouth, while the equator crosses directly through its center.

The settlement derives its name from macapaba, a Tupi term referencing the local bacaba palm fruit. Spanish explorer Francisco de Orellana initially claimed the area in 1544, naming it Nueva Andalucía. The modern community originated as a Portuguese military detachment station established in 1738. Under the authority of Francisco Xavier de Mendonça Furtado, who governed Pará, Sebastião Veiga Cabral founded the town of São José de Macapá on February 4, 1758. Construction on the fortress of São Joselito de Macapá began in 1764 but required 18 years to finish due to worker illness and slave escapes. The community achieved city status in 1854.

The city covers an area of 6,407.12 square kilometres and has a population estimated at 512,902 as of 2020. Local administration falls under the admin1 region of Amapá within the America/Belem timezone, positioned at coordinates latitude 0.03889 and longitude -51.06639. Transportation connections rely on the federal highway BR-156 linking northward to French Guiana, alongside regional routes such as the AP-010 to Santana and the AP-030 to Mazagão, while the Oyapoque River Bridge opened to traffic on March 20, 2017. Additionally, Macapá International Airport operates 3 kilometres from the urban center, tracing its origins to a World War II United States air base.
