01 · Overview

Londrina, in brief

Foundational Settling of Londrina

Londrina is a city situated in the north of the state of Paraná, Brazil, positioned 388 km (241 miles) north-west of the state capital Curitiba. It holds the designation of being the second largest city in the state and the fourth largest in the southern region of the country, featuring a population of 581,382.

A historical turning point for the municipality began when the region was originally explored by British settlers. The city was officially established in 1930 through the efforts of a small group of Italian, Japanese, and German settlers. The territory's development was fundamentally tied to a London cotton company, Paraná Plantations Limited, which made the original investment to settle the area and launch railroad stations designed to ease the transportation of coffee grains from northern Paraná and southern São Paulo states to the port of Santos. Because of this investment by British entrepreneurs, the area was named Londrina, paying homage to the British capital, known as Londres in Portuguese.

Following its establishment, the municipality rapidly developed into the commercial, political, and cultural centre of the state's northern pioneer zone. Agriculture established its primary economic foundation, anchored by the rich Northern Paraná and South Western São Paulo State crimson soil, locally known as terra roxa or vermelha. Over time, agricultural activities diversified beyond coffee to include corn, wheat, cotton, horticulture, beans, peanuts, rice, sugar cane, soy bean, and fruit plantations. Alongside its thriving agricultural production—which includes hosting the largest agricultural fair in Latin America, the Expo Londrina—the city expanded its industrial park to incorporate weaving, textiles, and agricultural factories, while also building growing commerce, service, and real estate sectors.

Today, the municipality functions within a presidential federal republic governed by executive and legislative branches, including a City Council composed of 19 councilors elected for four-year terms. Municipal transportation and connectivity are supported by the Londrina – Governador José Richa Airport. Educational infrastructure expanded significantly alongside the city's growth, featuring major institutions such as the Universidade Estadual de Londrina (Londrina State University) and the Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (Federal University of Technology – Paraná), alongside universal health care coverage provided through the Sistema Único de Saúde alongside private facilities.
