01 · Overview

Leuven, in brief

Leuven is a city in Belgium located in the province of Flemish Brabant within the Flemish Region. Positioned about 25 kilometres east of Brussels, this Dutch-speaking municipality serves as the capital and largest city of Flemish Brabant and maintains a population of 101,032 residents.

A major historical turning point arrived in the late 1560s, when religious persecutions of Protestants and ensuing political and religious turmoil deeply disrupted intellectual life within the municipality. During this era of upheaval, numerous professors and university alumni migrated abroad. This regional brain drain directly benefited institutions such as the newly founded University of Leiden in Holland, which absorbed many of the displaced scholars.

Despite this significant exodus of academic talent, scholarly endeavors persisted. The local institution continued its academic output, maintaining excellence in classical studies under figures like Justus Lipsius and theological scholarship guided by Johannes Molanus. Originally established in 1425 as the oldest university in the Low Countries, the academic center had previously drawn humanists such as Erasmus and Hieronymus van Busleyden, who founded the Collegium Trilingue in 1517 to teach Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. The municipality also accommodated groundbreaking printing and scientific milestones, including the 1516 publication of Thomas More's Utopia at Dirk Martens' local printing house, alongside the foundational cartography and triangulation methods developed by Gemma Frisius.

Today, the municipality encompasses the sub-municipalities of Leuven proper, Heverlee, Kessel-Lo, Wilsele, and Wijgmaal, along with parts of Haasrode and Korbeek-Lo. Operating within the Europe/Brussels timezone and using the EUR currency, the urban center functions both as a vibrant university hub hosting KU Leuven—the largest Dutch-speaking university globally—and as the corporate headquarters for Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest beer brewer.
