01 · Overview

Hasselt, in brief

Hasselt functions as the capital and largest city of the province of Limburg within the Flemish Region of Belgium. Positioned geographically between the Campine region north of the Demer river and the Hesbaye region to the south, the municipality accommodates a total population of 90,249 residents as of 1 January 2025.

Founding roots on the Helbeek

Settlement began around the 7th century along the Helbeek, a tributary of the Demer river. During the medieval period, the locality evolved into a free city within the county of Loon, earning its initial written mention in a document dated 1165. Freedom rights matching those of Liège were granted to the settlement in 1232 by Arnold IV, Count of Loon, establishing its prominence through a favorable geographic setting near the count's castle at Herkenrode in Kuringen.

Shifting regional governance

Administrative control transitioned in 1366 when the county of Loon fell under the direct authority of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, remaining so until French annexation in 1794. Following the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, the territory joined the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, and King William I subsequently renamed the department. After Belgium split from the Netherlands in 1830, a resolution nine years later in 1839 formally divided Limburg into Belgian and Dutch sections, designating Hasselt as the provisional capital of the Belgian province of Limburg.

Twentieth-century municipal evolution

Urban boundaries expanded substantially in 1977 through a municipal merger that combined the locality with surrounding areas including Kermt, Kuringen, Sint-Lambrechts-Herk, Stevoort, and Wimmertingen. Further administrative restructuring occurred on 1 January 2025, when the neighboring village of Kortessem merged into Hasselt, adding several new sub-municipalities to the broader municipal framework.
