Mukalla is a seaport city in Yemen's Hadhramaut governorate. It lies on the Gulf of Aden, about 480 kilometres east of Aden, and had a population of approximately 595,000 in 2023.

Founded in 1035 as a fishing settlement, Mukalla grew from a modest bay—once called Al‑Kheesa—into a strategic trading hub. Proximity to the ancient trading post of Qana linked it to incense routes between India and Africa. In the 19th and early 20th centuries the city was contested by the Kathiri and Qu’aiti Sultanates; it ultimately became the capital of the Qu’aiti State of Hadhramaut, a member of the Eastern Aden Protectorate where a British Resident Advisor was stationed.

British explorers such as Theodore Bent recorded Mukalla in the 1890s as the sole port of significance between Aden and Muscat, noting its role in regional commerce and, regrettably, the slave trade of the era.
