Amgala Overview and Historical Significance
Amgala is an oasis situated in Western Sahara. The city is home to a population of 4,398 residents and operates within the Africa/El_Aaiun timezone.
Geographically, Amgala lies between Tifariti and Smara, positioned outside the Moroccan Wall in a territory controlled by the Polisario. Because of its ample supply of water, this location in the Saguia el-Hamra Valley became a strategic hub during the Western Sahara War. Algerian troops established a base here to provide food and medical assistance to refugees before transporting them onward to Algeria.
The locality became the site of a major historical turning point involving multiple battles between the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces and Polisario Front forces, supported by units of the Algerian Army. In January 1976, an unexpected attack by Moroccan units on the oasis caused heavy damage and resulted in the capture of ninety-nine Algerian soldiers. While Algeria maintained that its forces were present solely to render humanitarian assistance to Sahrawi refugees fleeing toward Tindouf, Morocco characterized the presence as a direct military intervention.
A second battle occurred at Amgala between 13 and 15 February 1976, during which Polisario troops defeated a small Moroccan garrison that suffered heavy casualties and was nearly wiped out. A subsequent battle took place at the oasis on 8 November 1989. Additional details regarding these events are documented in the Amgala records.
