01 · Overview

Indianapolis, in brief

Indianapolis is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Indiana, situated along the west fork of the White River in the central till plain region. Colloquially known as Indy, this Marion County seat serves as a prominent commercial and manufacturing center.

Indigenous peoples inhabited the area dating to as early as 10,000 BC, with the Lenape and the Miami Nation holding primary claims before the Treaty of St. Mary's in 1818. A historical turning point arrived as tribal removal paved the way for the New Purchase and the establishment of a planned settlement. In 1821, Indianapolis was designated as the new seat of state government and platted on a one-square-mile grid by Alexander Ralston and Elias Pym Fordham. The seat of state government officially moved here from Corydon, Indiana, on January 1, 1825.

Transportation milestones rapidly transformed the early town into the Crossroads of America. The opening of the National Road in 1827 and the arrival of the first railroad in 1847 expanded commerce, followed by the opening of Indianapolis Union Station in 1853 as the first union station in the world. During the American Civil War, the municipality shifted into a vital Union logistics hub under the leadership of Governor Oliver P. Morton.

According to the 2020 census, Indianapolis proper registered a population of 887,642 residents across 368 square miles. The city-county government operates under Unigov, a consolidation enacted in 1970. Today, the urban economy anchors the 28th largest metropolitan economy in the United States, supporting diverse industries, eight university campuses, and major cultural institutions. The international standing of the municipality is closely tied to the Indianapolis 500, recognized as the world's largest single-day sporting event.
