East Flatbush, in brief

East Flatbush is a residential neighborhood situated in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Bounded by Crown Heights, Brownsville, Flatlands, Canarsie, and Flatbush, the area functions as part of Brooklyn Community District 17 and maintains a primary ZIP code of 11203.

Historically, the central section known as Farragut was largely populated by Jewish and Italian residents before 1950. A major historical turning point occurred in the decades following World War II, as demographic shifts brought an influx of African Americans and immigrants from the West Indies, including individuals from Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, and other Caribbean nations. By the 1990s, African Americans had become a majority in Farragut, marking a broader transformation across the entire neighborhood. Concurrently, the mid-1990s saw the emergence of Remsen Village as a recognized subsection name within the community.

Today, East Flatbush comprises three neighborhood tabulation areas: Erasmus, Farragut, and Remsen Village. The area spans an elevation of 9 meters and operates within the America/New_York timezone. The 2010 United States census recorded a population of 135,619 residents within an area of 1,871.5 acres, representing a decrease of 7.2 percent from the 2000 count of 145,359. General demographic figures published for the broader region note a total population of 178,464. The racial makeup recorded in 2010 was predominantly Black or African-American at 88.7 percent, alongside smaller percentages of White, Asian, Native American, and other populations, with Hispanic or Latino residents comprising 6.6 percent.

The neighborhood is patrolled by the 67th Precinct of the New York City Police Department and represented politically by the New York City Council's 40th, 41st, and 45th Districts. Within its boundaries sit major medical institutions including Kings County Hospital, SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and Kingsbrook Jewish, as well as the Holy Cross Cemetery located on Tilden Avenue.
