01 · Overview

Derby, in brief

Derby is a cathedral city and unitary authority area located in England on the River Derwent, serving as the original county town after which Derbyshire is named. With a population of 270,468, the city operates administratively independent from Derbyshire County Council and functions within the Europe/London timezone at latitude 52.92277 and longitude -1.47663.

What historical turning point redirected the town's destiny in the eighteenth century?

A major historical turning point occurred during the Jacobite rising of 1745. On 4 December 1745, Jacobite Army troops led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart arrived in Derby while marching toward London in an attempt to overthrow the reigning House of Hanover. The prince stayed at Exeter House on Full Street and convened a council of war on 5 December. Based on misleading information that a government army was advancing to meet him south of Derby, the council made the pivotal decision to retreat. Consequently, the prince abandoned his invasion at Swarkestone Bridge on the River Trent just south of Derby, turning back his bedraggled army and altering the course of British history.

Following this era, the town experienced rapid growth during the industrial revolution, housing Lombe's Mill as an early British factory and containing the southern portion of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. The subsequent arrival of the railways in the 19th century transformed Derby into a major hub of the British rail industry after the North Midland Railway established its works there in 1840. Later, the establishment of a car and aircraft factory by Rolls-Royce in 1907 initiated an industrial boom. Although Derby had possessed a cathedral since 1927, it officially attained city status on 7 June 1977 when Queen Elizabeth II awarded it to mark the 25th anniversary of her ascension to the throne, formalised when the monarch presented the letters patent in person on 28 July 1977 on the steps of the Council House.
