01 · Overview

Dagenham, in brief

Dagenham is a town situated in England within the United Kingdom, positioned 11+1⁄2 miles (19 kilometres) east of Charing Cross. Operating within the Europe/London time zone at coordinates 51.55 latitude and 0.16667 longitude, the town has a recorded population of 108,368 inhabitants.

Historically structured as a rural parish within the Becontree Hundred of Essex, the landscape stretched from Hainault Forest down to the River Thames. The area remained largely undeveloped until 1921, when the London County Council initiated construction of the expansive Becontree housing estate. This housing development spurred rapid population growth in the early 20th century, leading to the establishment of the Dagenham Urban District in 1926 and the Municipal Borough of Dagenham in 1938. In 1965, the area was incorporated into Greater London as part of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

Transport connectivity developed alongside the local population and industry. In 1854, the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway was constructed through the southern part of the area near the River Thames, followed by a direct route from Barking to Pitsea in 1885 that introduced a station north of the village. The Dagenham Dock station opened on the southern route in 1908. By 1932, the electrified District line of the London Underground was extended through the town to Upminster, opening stations at Dagenham East and Dagenham Heathway.

Dagenham became recognized for industrial activity, most notably as the site of the Ford Dagenham motor car plant, which served as the location for the Ford sewing machinists strike of 1968. Following industrial decline, the southern section adjacent to the River Thames was integrated into the Thames Gateway redevelopment area, featuring the construction of the Beam Park district on the former Ford plant site.
