01 · Overview

City of Westminster, in brief

The City of Westminster is a London borough with city status located in Greater London, England. Positioned at coordinates 51.4975 and -0.1357, this urban center operates within the Europe/London timezone and uses the GBP currency.

How did Westminster develop from an early settlement into a royal center?

Following the depopulation of Roman London in the fifth century, an Anglo-Saxon agricultural and trade settlement emerged to the west, associated with the Middle Saxons and sometimes called Lundenwic. Over time, Lundenburh was repopulated, causing Lundenwic to decline into a pastoral area partially known as Aldwych. The origins of the City of Westminster pre-date the Norman Conquest of England. In the mid-eleventh century, King Edward the Confessor began building an abbey at Westminster, constructing a palace between the abbey and the river. This guaranteed that the seat of government would be fixed at Westminster, drawing power and wealth west out of the old City of London. Westminster served as an important center of royal authority from Saxon times and was declared a city in 1540 when Westminster Abbey was temporarily elevated to a cathedral. The modern borough was created in 1965 as part of the reforms that established Greater London, covering the former metropolitan boroughs of Westminster, Paddington, and St Marylebone.

What defines the geography and layout of the borough?

The borough contains a large part of central London, featuring major shopping areas around Oxford Street, Regent Street, Piccadilly, and Bond Street, alongside the entertainment district of Soho. It holds the United Kingdom's Houses of Parliament, much of the British government, and iconic landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Whitehall, Westminster Cathedral, 10 Downing Street, and Trafalgar Square. Major open spaces include Hyde Park and most of Regent's Park, while inner suburbs encompass St John's Wood, Maida Vale, Bayswater, Belgravia, and Pimlico. Bordered to the east by the City of London with the boundary marked by Temple Bar, Westminster also neighbors Camden, Brent, Kensington and Chelsea, Wandsworth, and Lambeth. Charing Cross in Westminster serves as the notional center of London from which distances are measured.
