Esenler

Esenler is a municipality and district located on the European side of Istanbul Province, Turkey. Covering an area of 43 square kilometres at latitude 41.0435 and longitude 28.87619, the district supports a population of 520,235 operating within the Europe/Istanbul timezone under the leadership of Mayor Tevfik Göksu.

Dense corridors

Positioned centrally among the industrial neighbouring districts of Gaziosmanpaşa, Güngören, and Bağcılar, Esenler consists mainly of densely packed, working-class residential areas. Daily life across its 17 neighbourhoods reflects a history shaped by internal migration waves to Istanbul spanning from the 1960s to the 1990s. With a population exceeding half a million people, the district operates with desperately insufficient infrastructure, creating over-crowded schoolrooms and numerous associated daily challenges.

Layered ground

Long before current routines took shape, the territory sat well outside the city walls during Ottoman times, encompassing the villages of Litros and Avas inhabited by Greek farmers. Following the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey, those original villagers were deported, and the land was subsequently settled by Turks who had themselves been deported from Macedonia. Decades later, urban boundaries shifted as Esenler remained part of the Bakırköy district until 1992, and subsequently belonged to Güngören between 1992 and 1994. The footprint of the district expanded further in March 2020 when the 15 Temmuz neighbourhood was established through the municipal acquisition of the 47th Motorised Infantry Regiment Command barracks area.

Active spaces

Daily movement extends into local athletic facilities such as the Esenler Stadium, which opened in 2017 inside the Esenler Sports Village located in the Kemer Neighborhood.
