01 · OverviewArima, in brief
Arima’s Geographical Setting
Arima is a borough in the east of Trinidad and Tobago. It is the easternmost of the three boroughs and the second largest by area.
The borough lies at latitude 10.63737 and longitude ‑61.28228, within the America/Port_of_Spain time zone. It occupies the south‑central foothills of the Northern Range and borders the towns of Sangre Grande and Arouca. Directly to the south the Caroni–Arena Dam marks the lower limit of the municipal boundary. The area is administered as the Royal Chartered Borough of Arima and forms part of the nation’s East–West Corridor metropolitan region.
Arima’s climate is classified as tropical rainforest, bordering on tropical monsoon, with little seasonal temperature variation due to its proximity to the Northern Range. A pronounced wet season extends from June through November, while a relatively drier interval occurs between January and April.
The borough’s population is estimated at about 35 000 residents, with the 2011 census recording 33 606 inhabitants, making it the fourth‑largest municipality in Trinidad and Tobago after Port of Spain, Chaguanas and San Fernando. The official currency is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar (TTD) and the spoken languages include English (en‑TT), Hindustani (hns), French, Spanish and Chinese.
Arima’s transport network links it to the wider island via several major arteries: the Churchill–Roosevelt Highway, the Eastern Main Road and the Priority Bus Route. Additional routes such as the Arima Bypass, Cocorite Street, Tumpuna Road and O’Meara Road connect neighbourhoods to the town centre. A PTSC bus terminal provides services to Sangre Grande, Mundo Nuevo, Blanchisseuse, Carapo, Malabar, Morne La Croix, La Horquetta, Wallerfield, Brasso Seco and the capital Port of Spain. Maxi‑taxis also operate from the centre along fixed routes to Port of Spain and Sangre Grande.
Arima received its royal charter on 1 August 1888 after a petition to Queen Victoria in 1887, becoming the Royal Chartered Borough of Arima. The borough’s name derives from a plant whose roots were used for fishing by the First Peoples, contrary to the popular belief linking it to an Arawak word for water.
