Khujand is the second-largest city of Tajikistan and functions as the capital of its northernmost Sughd province. Situated on the Syr Darya river at the mouth of the Fergana Valley, the city maintains a population of 191000 residents and stands as one of the oldest settlements in Central Asia.

A major historical turning point occurred in 329 BC when the city was captured by Alexander the Great and renamed Alexandria Eschate. Serving as a distant frontier bastion for Greek settlers against nomadic Scythian tribes, the location developed into a vital staging point and cultural hub along the ancient Silk Road. Over subsequent centuries, the settlement transitioned through numerous empires, including the Umayyad Caliphate in the eighth century, the Mongol Empire in the thirteenth century, and the Russian Empire in the nineteenth century.

During the Soviet era, the city was renamed Leninabad in 1936 and remained under that designation until 1991. The area was transferred from the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic to the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic in 1929 to incorporate its predominantly ethnic Tajik population into the newly upgraded union-level republic.

Tracing its origins back approximately 2,500 years to the Persian Empire, Khujand represents one of the oldest settlements in Central Asia. A critical turning point in its antiquity occurred in 329 BC when Alexander the Great captured the location, renaming it Alexandria Eschate, or Alexandria the Furthest. Operating as a crucial staging point along the northern Silk Road, the fortified settlement served as a Greek bastion against nomadic Scythian tribes north of the Syr Darya River, preserving Hellenistic culture as late as 30 BC.

Throughout its history, this strategic hub transitioned through numerous empires. Following the conquest by Qutayba ibn Muslim in the early eighth century AD, the city was incorporated into the Umayyad Caliphate, initiating a process of Islamicization. Subsequent rulers included the Samanid Empire, the Kara-Khanid Khanate, Karakhitans, and Khwarazmshahs. A devastating historical turning point transpired in 1220 when the local population strongly resisted the Mongol hordes, resulting in the city being laid to waste. Later periods brought governance under the Chagatai Khanate, the Timurid dynasty, the Shaybanid dynasty of Bukhara, and the Kokand Khanate before Tsarist Russia assumed control in 1866 as part of the General Governorate of Turkestan.

During the Soviet era, the settlement experienced further administrative restructuring. After brief integration into the Turkestan ASSR and the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic, the area was transferred to the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic in 1929. The city was renamed Leninabad on January 10, 1936, a designation it retained until 1991. Today, the majority of the inhabitants are ethnic Tajiks who speak Tajik and Russian, and the municipality remains positioned near the present borders of both Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
