01 · OverviewIstaravshan, in brief
Overview
Istaravshan is a city in Sughd Province, Tajikistan. It lies in the northern foothills of the Turkistan mountain range, 78 kilometers southwest of Khujand on the main road that joins Khujand and Dushanbe.
In 2000 the Tajik government renamed the settlement from Uroteppa to Istaravshan. The city’s administrative territory covers 1,830 square kilometres and is home to 273,500 residents, of whom about 76 percent live in the surrounding countryside. The local time zone is Asia/Dushanbe, the official currency is the Tajik somoni (TJS), and the principal languages are Tajik (tg) and Russian (ru).
Historically, Istaravshan ranks among Central Asia’s oldest centres of commerce and craft. The city celebrated its 2,500th anniversary in 2002, underscoring a continuous urban presence that may extend back to the Achaemenid period; some scholars identify it as one of three possible sites of ancient Cyropolis, founded by Cyrus the Great in the 6th century B.C.
Administratively, Istaravshan comprises the urban core and ten jamoats that together form the modern municipal structure. Notable individuals associated with the city include the poet‑historian Dilshad Barna (1800–1905), who wrote in Persian and Chaghatai Turkic, and the theoretical chemist Ulmas Mirsaidovich Mirsaidov (born 1945).
