01 · Overview

Leganés, in brief

Leganés is a municipality and city located in Spain within the Community of Madrid. Situated 11 kilometers southwest of the capital on a plain in the Inner Plateau of the Iberian Peninsula, it forms an integral part of the Madrid metropolitan area.

A major historical turning point for Leganés occurred in 1820 with the abolition of feudal privileges for the marquesses of Leganés, which prompted the disentailment of the town and the waters of the Butarque stream. This regulatory shift necessitated modernization and subsequent population growth, ultimately absorbing the entire population of the neighboring village of Polvoranca after it disappeared in the 1840s due to poor living conditions. The subsequent mid-nineteenth-century development accelerated further when the Santa Isabel Psychiatric Hospital opened on 28 December 1851 as one of Spain's first asylums, bringing essential infrastructure improvements such as street paving, sewer systems, and electric lighting to the area. Transportation milestones followed, including the opening of the Leganés railway station on 20 June 1876 as part of the Madrid-Cáceres-Portugal line and the launch of the capital's first steam-powered tram.

During the mid-20th century, Leganés experienced another profound transformation from an agricultural community specializing in vegetables, such as cucumbers, into a residential commuter town. Internal migration from regions like Extremadura, Castile, and Andalusia drove rapid population increases, leading to the construction of worker neighborhoods like San Nicasio, Zarzaquemada, and El Carrascal. With the arrival of democracy, subsequent urban plans prioritized the expansion of public services, healthcare facilities like the Severo Ochoa Hospital, and higher education through the establishment of the Charles III University of Madrid's Polytechnic School at the former Savoy Barracks.
