Ansan-si

Ansan-si is a city located in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, positioned southwest of Seoul within the Seoul Metropolitan Area. Situated along the Yellow Sea coast, the city jurisdiction encompasses several islands, the largest of which is Daebu Island.

Operating within the Asia/Seoul timezone, the municipality records a population of 623,256 residents. Rail connectivity to Seoul is maintained via Seoul Subway Line 4. The municipal area includes higher learning institutions such as Ansan University, Shin Ansan University, the ERICA campus of Hanyang University, and the Seoul Institute of the Arts, alongside the headquarters of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority.

Cultural exchange is a prominent aspect of the city's identity. Wongokbon-dong is designated as a multicultural area due to its high concentration of foreign workers. In 2021, Ansan was selected as the largest residential area for foreigners in the country and pursued designation as a special multicultural city. The city hosts an annual street play festival and joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in 2018.

Historical remnants across the region include New Stone Age shell middens and prehistoric remains found at Oido, Sihwaho, Chojidong, and Daebudo, as well as Old Stone Age relics uncovered during the construction of the Seohaean Expressway in 1995. Archaeological records also feature stone dolmen tombs located in the Seonbu-dong and Wolpi-dong areas.

Administrative boundaries divide the city into two distinct districts: Danwon District and Sangnok District. Geographical features include reclaimed wetlands designated as the Ansan Reed Marshy Park, alongside land boundaries shared with Gunpo to the east, Anyang to the northeast, Siheung to the north, and Hwaseong to the south.
