01 · Overview

Jesenice, in brief

Jesenice is the tenth-largest town in Slovenia and serves as the seat of the Municipality of Jesenice. Located in the traditional province of Upper Carniola, the town spans the southern side of the Karawanks along the border with Austria to the north.

How did mining shape the town's historical turning point?

The historical development of Jesenice was fundamentally driven by its ironworks and metallurgy industries. Early settlements on the southern slopes of the Karawanks, such as Planina pod Golico, were originally founded due to the local need for wood, flowing water for mills, and iron ore. As new techniques for extracting iron from ore developed, the demand for water energy grew beyond what small streams could supply. This led to a crucial turning point in 1538, when Bernardo Bucellini from Bergamo received permission from Habsburg King Ferdinand I to relocate the ironworks to the Sava Dolinka River, creating the settlement that would become Jesenice.

Independent settlements like Plavž, Sava, Murova, and Slovenski Javornik evolved separately until they were amalgamated into the town of Jesenice on March 20, 1929, by decree of King Alexander I of Yugoslavia. Prior to the arrival of the railway at the end of the 19th century, these areas were connected only by a gravel road. A major industrial milestone occurred on September 18, 1869, when the Luckmann family of bankers from Ljubljana founded the Carniolan Industrial Company (KID). This brought all Upper Carniolan ironworks under a single administration for the first time. The company achieved worldwide fame and a gold medal at the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna following the scientific discovery of a process for obtaining ferromanganese in a smelting furnace.

Following World War II, Jesenice experienced a new economic golden age as a primary steel manufacturer tasked with rebuilding the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. At its 1970s economic peak, the local ironworks employed over 8,000 people. However, the collapse of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia triggered another historical turning point. Altered economic policies, increased competition from Western metallurgy, and the loss of access to raw material resources in newly independent republics led to massive layoffs and emigration. Since Slovenia's declaration of independence in 1991, the town has reduced its reliance on the metallurgic industry and worked to develop other economic sectors.
