01 · Overview

Zemun, in brief

Zemun is a municipality in the city of Belgrade, Serbia. It lies on the right bank of the Danube river, upstream from downtown Belgrade and north of the Sava.

River confluences and border shifts. The landscape is defined by the strategic terrain near the confluence of the Sava and the Danube. In earlier centuries, this geography placed the settlement directly in the center of ongoing border wars between the Habsburg and Ottoman empires. The town historically operated as a major fishing center and maintained a port on the Danube.

Urban expansion and regional integration. Once a separate town, Zemun was absorbed into Belgrade in 1934. The late 20th-century development of New Belgrade subsequently expanded the continuous urban area and merged it directly with Zemun. Alongside Zemun proper, the municipality encompasses the northwestern suburbs of Batajnica, Ugrinovci, Zemun Polje, and Nova Galenika.

Inhabitants and demographics. According to the 2022 census results, the municipality of Zemun has a population of 177,908 inhabitants. Historical records note a diverse population profile across the centuries, including ethnic Serbs, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, Catholics, Armenians, and Muslims.
