01 · Overview

Micoud, in brief

Overview

Micoud is a town that serves as the seat of the Micoud District on the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia. The town records a population of 3,406 residents.

The broader Micoud District forms one of ten districts, formerly called quarters, on the island. Historical census enumerations for the district recorded 16,143 people in 2002, while the final 2010 Census documented 16,284 people. A former quarter known as Praslin Quarter was merged into the Micoud Quarter and was not enumerated separately in the 2010 Census, though the 2001 Census lists Praslin as part of the district.

Administrative organization divides the territory into 69 second-order administrative divisions, alongside two electoral constituencies within the House of Assembly of Saint Lucia. These constituencies are represented by Jeremiah Norbert for Micoud North and Allen Chastanet for Micoud South, following their service beginning in July 2021.

Geographic features across the territory include three significant mountains—Mount Beaucoup, Mount Durocher, and Piton Saint Esprit—as well as three forest or nature reserves: the Frigate Islands Nature Reserve, the Quilesse Forest Reserve, and the Savannes Bay Nature Reserve. Offshore landforms within the area encompass Frigate Island, Praslin Island, and Scorpion Island.

Cultural history within the area includes notable figures originating from the district, such as Sesenne, a singer and cultural icon who lived from 1914 to 2010, and Daren Sammy, a former West Indies cricketer and Head Coach of the West Indies.
