01 · Overview

Yaroslavl, in brief

Yaroslavl is a city located in Russia and serves as the administrative center of Yaroslavl Oblast. Positioned 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow, the settlement lies at the exact confluence of the Volga and the Kotorosl rivers.

The geography of Yaroslavl heavily shaped its historical development as a transportation and trade hub. The oldest settlement area within the city sits on the left bank of the Volga River directly in front of the Strelka, a small cape formed where the Volga and Kotorosl rivers meet. When Yaroslav the Wise founded the initial Yaroslavl Kremlin during his rule of the Principality of Rostov between 988 and 1010, he selected a site naturally defended against attacks by the high, steep banks of the Volga, Kotorosl, and Medveditsa rivers. Over the centuries, the positioning along these major waterways facilitated extensive regional and international commerce, linking the city to the Volga trade route, the port of Arkhangelsk in the far north, and eastern trade lines extending over the Urals toward Siberia.

As the settlement expanded, its geographic prominence led to infrastructural intersections. Several major railways and highways were constructed to intersect at the city. Today, the historic portion of Yaroslavl occupies the river confluence and is recognized as a World Heritage Site. Furthermore, the municipality forms an integral part of the Golden Ring, which is a collection of historic cities situated northeast of Moscow. According to the 2021 census, the population of the city stood at 577,279 inhabitants, while broader geographic administrative tracking places the population at 608,722.
