01 · Overview

Chapayevsk, in brief

Chapayevsk is a town in Samara Oblast, Russia, located 40 kilometers from the city of Samara on the right bank of the Chapayevka River, a tributary of the Volga River. The settlement holds the status of a town of oblast significance, functioning as an administrative unit equal to districts, and is incorporated as Chapayevsk Urban Okrug.

The history of the town began in 1908 when a military plant was established by a decree of Nicholas II, giving the area the initial name Ivashchenkovo. The settlement was subsequently known as Trotsk after Leon Trotsky until 1929, before being renamed Chapayevsk after Red Army commander Vasily Chapayev. The town operated as a base for secret military production, hosting four such factories until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. A significant historical turning point occurred on June 18, 2013, when strong explosions originating in the town's ammunition storage facilities rocked the area and surrounding villages. The blasts injured at least 34 people and prompted the evacuation of 5,000 residents.

Chapayevsk is known as the town of death due to high amounts of environmental toxins. Medical evaluations indicate that more than 80% of children suffer from chronic diseases, and the birthrate has decreased by 40% since 1991. Additionally, dioxin found in women's breast milk reached concentrations 400 times above normal levels. Following extensive research, a special committee of the United Nations declared Chapayevsk an ecological disaster zone in 1994.
