01 · Overview

Baia Mare, in brief

Baia Mare is a city located in northwestern Romania and serves as the capital and largest municipality of Maramureș County. Situated along the Săsar River, the settlement functions as a prominent economic, cultural, and educational center within the historical region of Maramureș.

Cultural exchange and artistic development have long characterized the urban identity of Baia Mare, historically known as Nagybánya. In the late nineteenth century, a group of young Hungarian painters including Simon Hollósy, István Réti, János Thorma, Béla Iványi-Grünwald, and Károly Ferenczy traveled to Munich to study art. Lacking an academy of art in Hungary at the time, these artists eventually established the Nagybánya artists' colony in the city. Hollósy taught new Western European techniques in his local studio, while the collective focused on naturalism and plein air painting.

The collaborative efforts of these artists deeply shaped the trajectory of twentieth-century Hungarian and Romanian art. Works produced by members of the colony have been preserved and exhibited internationally, including at the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest, which organized notable retrospectives such as the 2009 exhibition Munich in Hungarian, Hungarian Artists in Munich 1850-1914 and the 1966 centennial exhibition dedicated to the art of Nagybánya. Beyond its visual arts heritage, the city achieved recognition as the Romanian Youth Capital between 2 May 2018 and 1 May 2019, reinforcing its role as a regional hub for younger populations.
