01 · Overview

Lusail, in brief

Coastal expanse and economic hub

Lusail is the third-largest city in Qatar after Doha and Al-Rayyan, functioning as a vital economic center within the municipality of Al Daayen. Situated on the coast approximately 23 kilometres north of downtown Doha, the coastal city spans over 38 square kilometres and currently records a population of 198,600 people.

A historical turning point for the locality unfolded in the early twentieth century. In 1903, Sheikh Jassim settled in the area with allied tribes, establishing a base of operations that transformed the small coastal settlement into the principal residence of the head of the Al Thani family. Historical records from J. G. Lorimer in 1908 documented a village consisting of roughly 50 stone and mud houses, alongside the prominent landmark of Jabal Lusail and the fortification built around 1901. Sheikh Jassim died and was buried in Lusail in July 1913, and his former residence with its associated fort and traditional date press installations remains a recognized cultural icon of Qatar.

Modern transformation advanced significantly following a 2002 cabinet resolution, which designated Lusail and its suburbs as the first areas in the country where foreign nationals could acquire real estate. Official development plans for Lusail City were subsequently announced in 2005 under the direction of the state-controlled developer Qatari Diar, alongside Parsons Corporation and Dorsch-Gruppe. Infrastructure expansion progressed rapidly over the following decades, reaching over 80 percent completion by April 2018.

Today, the municipality functions across the Asia/Qatar timezone, integrating residential areas, commercial districts, marinas, and island resorts designed to eventually accommodate up to 450,000 people. The city gained global prominence as a host for major international events, featuring prominently during the 2022 FIFA World Cup at Lusail Stadium—which hosted the tournament final—and holding Formula One events starting with the first Qatar Grand Prix in 2021. Further expanding its international standing, the United Nations House at Lusail opened in March 2023 to serve as the main representative office of the United Nations in the country.
