01 · Overview

Elbląg, in brief

Elbląg is a city situated in northern Poland within the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. It functions as an academic and financial center with a population of 127,558 residents.

What defines the present-day economy of Elbląg?

Today, Elbląg operates as a vibrant urban center featuring an attractive tourist base. Industrialization in the 19th century helped revive its trading role, and the city is notably home to the country's largest brewery, which was founded in 1872. As an economic and financial node in the Warmia-Masuria region, the city also leverages its industrial heritage and tourist attractions.

Maritime commerce and port infrastructure remain integral to the local economy, though operations face specific geographic limitations. The port of Elbląg is not a deep-water facility, and waterways are restricted by law to vessels with a draft no greater than 1.5 meters. Large deep-water vessels cannot easily maneuver within the turning area, which has a 120-meter diameter, making Elbląg a subsidiary port of Gdańsk.

Historically, larger vessels were unable to reach the open Baltic Sea after 1945 without crossing into Russian territory. To address maritime access, the construction of the Vistula Spit canal was completed in September 2022. This infrastructure project allows vessels to access the Baltic Sea while remaining entirely within Polish territory, utilizing the city's three quay complexes, movable cranes, and railways.
