Port Moresby

Port Moresby is the capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea. It lies on the southwestern coast of the Papuan Peninsula, overlooking the Coral Sea.

Coastal crossroads

Founded on a natural harbour first charted by Captain John Moresby in 1873, the settlement grew into a trade centre during the latter half of the 19th century. European ships and later missionaries used the port as a gateway to inland tribes, sparking early exchanges of goods, ideas, and languages. The Motu and Koitabu peoples, long‑time custodians of the land, welcomed visitors while preserving their own cultural rhythms.

Motu‑Koitabu heritage

The traditional landowners are organised through the Motu Koita Assembly, a body that represents the intertwined Motu coastal dwellers and Koitabu hill communities. Their social units, called iduhu, function much like clans, fostering kinship ties that have endured through colonial upheavals and modern urban growth.

Layers of history

After the Union Jack was raised in April 1884, Port Moresby became the administrative heart of the British‑Australian protectorate. The city’s gridiron plan, laid out by surveyor Walter Cuthbertson, anchored the emerging town between Paga and Tuaguba hills. World War II transformed the harbour into a strategic Allied base, as Japanese forces sought to seize it in 1942–1943 to cut off Australia from Southeast Asia.

Modern pulse

Today the National Capital District houses a population recorded at 283,733, while earlier censuses noted 364,145 inhabitants in 2011 and a surge to 756,754 by 2024. The city’s role as a primate city gives it outsized influence over Papua New Guinea’s political, economic, and cultural life. It hosts the Pacific/Port_Moresby time zone, trades in the Papua New Guinean kina (PGK), and supports four official languages: English (en‑PG), Hiri Motu (ho), Mehek (meu), and Tok Pisin (tpi).

Global encounters

Port Moresby’s international profile was highlighted when it hosted the APEC summit in November 2018, drawing leaders from across the Pacific Rim. Security concerns surrounding the city’s reputation for violent crime underscored the challenges of balancing rapid urbanisation with community safety.

Through centuries of exchange—between indigenous clans, European traders, missionaries, and contemporary global delegates—Port Moresby remains a vibrant mosaic where past and present converse on the edge of the Coral Sea.
