Uromi

Uromi is a city located in Esan North-East, within Central Edo State, Nigeria. Originally known as Uronmun, it stands as the most populated area in Esanland.

Autonomous villages established by early aborigines from central Nigeria date back as far as 100 AD, operating under a gerontocracy where the eldest man served as head. Subsequent migration waves brought additional settlers from present-day Esanland, Ifeku Island, and Igodomigodo. Between 1100 AD and 1200 AD, these settlements coalesced into a formal kingdom headed by a monarch known in the Esan language as the Onojie. The kingdom is currently led by HRM, the Ojuromi Anslem Odaloighe Aidenojie II.

Historically, the people of Uromi demonstrated significant resilience and strength. Under the leadership of Agba N'Ojie, local populations resisted the expansionism of the Benin Empire during the reign of Oba Ozolua. Later, the community remained at the forefront of resistance against the British invasion of Esanland. Although officially scheduled market days occur at four-day intervals in certain village sectors, the Uromi Main Market operates daily from morning until late evening, providing portable lock-up stores where local farmers trade products derived from the region's rain forest zone, loamy soil, and topography.
