01 · Overview

Ijebu-Igbo, in brief

Overview of Ijebu-Igbo

Ijebu-Igbo is a town located in Ogun State, Nigeria, serving as the headquarters of the Ijebu North Local Government Area. Positioned approximately a 15-minute drive north of Ijebu Ode, the settlement lies at coordinates 6.97198 latitude and 3.99938 longitude within the Africa/Lagos timezone, and is the second largest town in Ogun State.

The historical turning point of the town centers on oral traditions surrounding its founding prince, Onayelu. Originally a prince and a skilled hunter in the northern part of Odo-Oluiwa near Ijebu Ode, Onayelu experienced a pivotal disruption when his father suddenly died and his younger brother, Ofiranoye, ascended to the throne while Onayelu was away on a hunting trip. Choosing not to return to Ijebu Ode following this controversial succession, Onayelu decided to settle permanently in the forested hunting region. This forested environment gave rise to the name Ijebu-Igbo, combining Ijebu with the forest.

Today, Ijebu-Igbo comprises five distinct towns and clans: Okesopin, Ojowo, Atikori, Oke-Agbo, and Japara. Each clan is governed by a second-class Oba, while the Orimolusi of Ijebu-Igbo serves as the first-class Oba and supreme head of the town. The settlement features extensive geographical boundaries bordering Ibadan, Ikire, and Ondo, and encompasses numerous surrounding villages and hamlets.

The local economy relies heavily on timber, cocoa, mineral resource exploitation, sawmills, and developed quarries, alongside enterprising pursuits across agriculture, real estate, education, banking, and technology. The population stands at 109,261 residents who primarily speak the Ijebu dialect of the Yoruba language, alongside usage of en-NG, ha, ig, and ff. Educational institutions within the municipality include Molusi College, Abusi Edumare Academy, Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, and the Nigeria Prison Service Academy.

For further documentation on the municipality, consult the Ijebu Igbo Wikipedia entry or the GeoNames record for Ijebu-Igbo.
