01 · Overview

Efon-Alaaye, in brief

Overview of Efon-Alaaye

Efon-Alaaye is a town situated in the Ekiti State of southwestern Nigeria, populated by the Yoruba people. Historical records indicate that the settlement dates back to 1200 A.D.

The foundation of the community represents a remarkable historical turning point tied to Obalufon Alaayemore, who was the third Ooni of Ile Ife and the son of Oduduwa. After stepping down from the Ile-Ife throne in favor of his uncle, the Ife war hero Oranmiyan, Obalufon Alaayemore established the kingdom of Efon-Alaaye. He later returned to Ile-Ife as the fifth Ooni, leaving the throne of Efon-Alaaye to his son, Adudu Oranku. This established a royal lineage that persists to the present day.

The town's governance operates through three rotating ruling houses: Ogbenuote, Obologun, and Asemojo. The monarchy is currently held by His Royal Highness Oba (Dr.) Emmanuel Aladejare Agunsoye II, the 46th Alaaye of Efon Alaaye, from the Ogbenuote ruling house. The king is assisted by the iwara mefa, consisting of six high chiefs who head major districts: the Obanla of Aaye Quarter, the Obaloja of Obalu Quarter, the Peteko of Isaja Quarter, the Oisajigan of Ejigan Quarter, the Alaayo of Emo Quarter, and the Ojubu of Ikagbe Quarter. The town also features a President General, the Aare of Efon Alaye, currently held by Chief Dr. Kunle Olajide.

Geographically, Efon-Alaaye rests in a region featuring hills and a relatively rough terrain. The community belongs to Efon Local Government, which stands as one of the largest local governments within Ekiti State. Local economic activity relies heavily on agriculture, with residents cultivating cash crops including cocoa, kolanuts, and palm trees, alongside food staples such as yam, rice, cassava, maize, and various fruits.

Demographically, the inhabitants are predominantly Christian, following a widespread religious shift by the 1930s that sparked a local revolution and resulted in the construction of several cathedrals. Active Christian groups include Catholics, Anglicans, the Christ Apostolic Church, Pentecostals, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Further details on the area are documented at Efon-Alaaye.
