01 · Overview

Agege, in brief

Agege is a large city and local government area located within the Ikeja Division of Lagos State, Nigeria. It forms an integral part of Greater Metropolitan Lagos and stands at coordinates 6.61563 latitude and 3.33337 longitude.

How did cultural exchange shape the early population of this urban center? Originally established as an ancient Awori farming settlement by the hunter Aige, or Ayige, of the Otta dynasty, the area experienced significant demographic shifts over centuries. During the mid-17th century Otta-Egba war, family members and relatives arrived from Otta, Oke Ata, and other old Awori clans. By the early 18th century, the community developed one of the most heterogeneous populations for its size in Nigeria, accommodating approximately 6,000 residents alongside over 2,000 floating inhabitants.

Cultural and economic interactions expanded further with the establishment of Agege Station by traders in the late 19th century. As kolanut plantations flourished, the booming trade attracted diverse groups including traders and laborers, notably Hausa communities. Because Yoruba farmers frequently engaged Hausa individuals for heavy labor such as tree cutting, the local residential area became known as Ilu Awon Ageigi, translating to the town of the tree cutters, from which the name Agege is also associated through Hausa settlers. Furthermore, Orile Agege preserved deep cultural roots through ancient Yoruba deities and traditional observances, including the Egungun Festival and the Gelede Festival.

With an estimated population of 683,600, the city operates within the Africa/Lagos timezone, utilizing the Nigerian Naira (NGN) currency and communicating across multiple linguistic traditions including en-NG, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and ff. Additional historical context regarding its development can be found via Wikipedia and GeoNames.
