01 · Overview

Yaren, in brief

Southern coastline coordinates

Yaren is a district of the Pacific island country of Nauru, officially the Republic of Naoero. It functions as the de facto capital of Nauru and is coextensive with the Yaren Constituency, located on the southern coast of the island at coordinates -0.55085, 166.9252 with an elevation of 5 metres and a population of 1100 people.

A historical turning point

A major historical turning point occurred in 1968 when the district was officially created. Prior to this, the area was known as Makwa or Moqua, names that refer to Moqua Well, an underground lake that served as the primary source of drinking water for the Nauruan people. Spanning an area of 1.5 square kilometres (0.58 square miles), the territory borders Buada to the north, Meneng to the east, and Boe to the west under a marine tropical rainforest climate with hot, humid conditions across the year.

Governance and infrastructure

Although the republic does not have cities or an official capital, Yaren is accepted by the United Nations as the main district. The currency used is AUD, and the official languages spoken are English and Nauruan. Government operations are concentrated here, housing the Parliament House, administration offices, the police headquarters, the fire station, the earth station, the Australian High Commission, the Taiwanese Embassy, and the Nauru International Airport along with the air terminal and head office of Nauru Airlines.

Local sights and education

Within its boundaries lie several notable locations, including the Moqua Well, Ella Park as a popular picnicking area, Japanese guns from World War II, and the Naoero Museum as the national museum in Nauru. Educational facilities include Yaren Primary School for years 1 to 3, and Nauru Secondary School for years 10 to 12. Furthermore, the Nauru Learning Village hosts the University of the South Pacific Nauru Campus, the Nauru Technical & Vocational Education Training Centre, and Nauru Secondary. Local political representation involves electing two members to the Parliament of Nauru in national elections every 3 years, with notable political figures including Isabella Dageago, Kieren Keke, Charmaine Scotty, and Dominic Tabuna.
