01 · Overview

Swakopmund, in brief

Swakopmund is a coastal city located in western Namibia and serves as the capital of the Erongo administrative district. Situated at the edge of the Namib Desert along the B2 main road, it lies 352 km west of the national capital, Windhoek.

Captain Curt von François founded Swakopmund on August 8, 1892, establishing it as the primary harbour for German South West Africa because the natural deep-sea port at Walvis Bay was controlled by the British. The initial settlement process required the first 120 Schutztruppe soldiers and 40 settlers to dig caves into the sand for shelter, while Kru tribesmen from Liberia offloaded cargo using special boats. The location was chosen due to freshwater availability and access to the interior territory, though the harbour lacked natural protection and the constructed breakwater silted up, leading to the later construction of a wooden jetty in 1905 and a steel jetty in 1914.

A major historical turning point arrived during World War I in 1915, when the Union of South Africa took over German South West Africa. This conquest removed the logistical and political barriers that had previously prevented use of the harbour at Walvis Bay. Consequently, all harbour operations in Swakopmund ceased, central government services were withdrawn, local businesses closed, and the population declined as the town lost its military and administrative importance.

Despite this collapse, a 1923 treaty in London provided a lifeline by leveraging Swakopmund's moderate Atlantic climate to re-shape the settlement into a recreational holiday resort. The city eventually transitioned through further economic shifts, including the 1976 opening of the Rössing uranium mine, which utilized the town for logistics and worker accommodation. By 2023, the population of Swakopmund reached 75,921 inhabitants, making it the fourth largest population centre in Namibia.
