01 · Overview

Oujda, in brief

Oujda Cultural Exchange and Regional Identity

Oujda functions as a major city in northeast Morocco and serves as the capital of the Oriental region. Situated approximately 15 kilometres west of the Moroccan-Algerian border, this urban center operates near the Beni Iznassen Mountains and about 55 kilometres south of the Mediterranean coast.

The history of cultural exchange and territorial transition in Oujda stems from its distinct frontier position. Founded in 994 by Ziri ibn Atiyya, a Berber chief of the Zenata Maghrawa tribe who sought proximity to his central Maghrib homeland, the settlement quickly became a strategic point of interaction. Over subsequent centuries, the city experienced multiple waves of control and cultural exchange between the Marinids of Fes and the Abdalwadids of the Kingdom of Tlemcen. Its fortifications were repeatedly rebuilt and modified by various rulers, including the Almohad caliph Muhammad al-Nasir and the Marinid sultan Abu Yaqub Yusuf.

Because of its location near the border, Oujda was frequently contested from the 16th century onward between the Sharifian dynasties of Morocco to the west and the Ottoman Empire to the east. The city was often attached to the region of Tlemcen during these shifts. Following long periods of political instability, the Alaouite dynasty incorporated the city permanently into Morocco in 1795 under the control established during the reign of Moulay Isma'il.

Cultural and political dynamics shifted further during the French occupation of the 19th and 20th centuries. French forces occupied Oujda in 1844 and 1859, with the Battle of Isly occurring to the west of the city in 1844. Later, the area served as a French military base used to control eastern Morocco, which led to the initial development of modern infrastructure. Mid-20th-century events further shaped the demographic and political landscape of the area, including anti-Jewish riots in June 1948 during the Palestine war, when Oujda served as a departure point for Moroccan Jews seeking to reach Israel. Later, from the onset of the Algerian Independence War in 1954, Morocco permitted the city to function as the logistic center of the Oujda Group.

Today, the municipality accommodates a population of 539,711 people, while a 2024 census recorded 506,224 residents. Linguistic diversity within the region includes Arabic, Berber, and French. Although the Algeria-Morocco border just east of the city has remained closed since 1994, Oujda maintains its historical identity as a border hub shaped by centuries of dynastic contest, migration, and cross-border relations with neighboring Algeria.
