01 · Overview

Larvotto, in brief

Overview of Larvotto

Larvotto, also designated as Larvotto/Bas Moulins, functions as the easternmost ward within the Principality of Monaco and belongs to the quarter of Monte Carlo. Geographically positioned at latitude 43.74361 and longitude 7.43151 inside the Municipality of Monaco, the territory operates under the Europe/Monaco timezone and utilizes the EUR currency, while its populations use fr-MC, English, and Italian languages.

The ward's landscape and land area expanded following the integration of Le Portier, a neighbourhood reclaimed from the sea that opened in 2024, altering the total surface area from 21.8 hectares to 27.5 hectares. Bounded to the northeast by Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France, Larvotto is situated northeast of Monte Carlo and La Rousse. The local terrain incorporates the Larvotto and Portier Coastal Reserve, a Ramsar zone encompassing approximately 0.23 km² featuring a coastal expanse with a rocky bottom reaching about 10 meters deep in its western section. The eastern sector of this marine and coastal zone contains beaches alongside artificial rocky protection works and vital Posidonia oceanica meadows. Prior to the construction work for the Le Portier neighborhood at the end of 2016, ecological adjustments included the transplantation of posidonia plates, lithophilic rocks, and roughly 47 large Nacres to the Larvotto seabed.

Urban features integrated into this landscape include Avenue Princesse Grace, which runs alongside Larvotto Beach and houses the municipal Japanese Garden. The ward also encompasses the Grimaldi Forum conference and congress center on its seafront, alongside the Sporting Monte-Carlo and various hotels. Demographically, Larvotto is recognized as the most densely populated district and the second largest by area in the principality after Fontvieille, recording a population of 5,443 residents in 2008.
