Palikir

Palikir is the capital city of the Federated States of Micronesia, located in Pohnpei State in the western Pacific Ocean. The city serves as the central administrative hub of the nation, operating with the US dollar as its currency.

A major historical turning point for the local economy occurred when the government decided to convert the Palikir area into a purpose-built capital city. Funded by US aid of US$15 million made available to develop the site into a modern town, the transformation led to the construction of all government offices, residential houses, and the residence of the President of the Federated States of Micronesia, replacing a formerly tiny village of little consequence.

Today, the economic resources of the capital city reflect those of the broader islands as a whole. The local economic framework relies basically on subsistence farming and fishing, including fish processing and aquaculture. Agricultural output features tropical plantation products like copra, breadfruit, taro, betel nuts, sweet potatoes, cassava, tropical fruits and vegetables, trochus shells, cacao, and rice, alongside livestock such as pigs and poultry. Key exports including fish, bananas, black pepper, and garments are sent mainly to Japan, while food, manufactured goods, machinery and equipment, and beverages are imported.

Financially, the country depends on financial support stemming from its Compact of Free Association with the US. International perspectives categorize the city as having a high degree of hardship with a typical hardship premium of 30%, and the cost of living for imported goods remains very high in comparison with other places in the world.

In ancient times, Pohnpei was ruled by tribal chiefs. Following periods of encounter by Portuguese and Spanish explorers in the 15th century, formal colonial settlement began with the Spanish in 1886. Control subsequently shifted to Germany via purchase at the end of the Spanish–American War in 1898, and later passed to the Japanese during World War I. Following World War II, the United States Government administered the island until the Federated States of Micronesia attained independence in May 1979.

Supported by US aid of US$15 million to develop the site into a modern town, all government offices, residential houses, and the residence of the President of the Federated States of Micronesia were constructed. Palikir was formally declared the capital of Micronesia in 1989.

Geographically, Palikir is positioned in the northwestern center of Pohnpei Island, surrounded by heavily wooded forest and located 8 kilometers southwest of Kolonia. The local climate features a tropical rainforest climate under the Köppen climate classification, characterized by heavy year-round rainfall that averages 5,202 millimeters annually, establishing it as the wettest capital in the world.

Demographically, the local population is Micronesian, featuring common ethnicities such as Chuukese, Kosraeans, Pohnpeian, and Yapese. English serves as the common and official language, alongside local languages including Chuukese, Kosraean, Pohnpeian, Yapese, Ulithian, Woleaian, Nukuoro, and Kapingamarangi. Christianity accounts for 96% of the population, with Roman Catholicism comprising the majority religion at over 50%. The town operates under a constitutional government headed by a president, maintaining free association with the United States following its 1979 independence.
